You can absolutely play solo! The game is designed for both single-player and cooperative play. When playing alone, you control both Fireboy (WASD keys) and Watergirl (arrow keys) simultaneously, which actually makes it more challenging as you need to coordinate both characters yourself. Many players prefer solo play as it develops multitasking skills and gives you complete control over timing.
The character dies instantly and you restart the current level from the beginning. Fireboy cannot survive any contact with water, blue pools, or water hazards - he'll dissolve immediately. Similarly, Watergirl dies the moment she touches lava, fire, or red hazardous areas. Both characters also die when touching green poisonous goo. The game has no health system - it's one touch and you restart.
The original Forest Temple contains 32 levels that progressively increase in difficulty. The first 10 levels teach basic mechanics like movement and element avoidance. Levels 11-20 introduce pressure plates and switches. Levels 21-32 feature complex multi-stage puzzles requiring precise timing and coordination. Each level typically takes 2-10 minutes depending on your skill level and puzzle-solving approach.
Yes, collecting all gems is mandatory to unlock the exit doors. Each level contains red gems for Fireboy and blue gems for Watergirl - both characters must collect their respective colored gems before the exit portals activate. Trying to reach the exit without all gems will leave the doors locked. The gem collection system encourages thorough exploration and adds a completion element beyond just reaching the end.
